The Role

We're working with one of the UK's most respected environmental consultancies to find an experienced Senior or Principal Ecologist to join their growing team in Surrey or London. This role offers the opportunity to work on high-profile, nationally significant projects that make a real difference to biodiversity, climate resilience, and sustainability across the UK.

You'll be joining a collaborative and forward-thinking ecology team, known for pushing boundaries, championing innovation, and delivering award-winning work across infrastructure, energy, and development sectors.


As a Senior or Principal Ecologist, you'll lead and support a variety of exciting ecological projects. You'll take a hands-on role in survey planning, stakeholder engagement, project management, and mentoring of junior staff, while also contributing to strategic business development and client relationships.

Responsibilities

  • Leading ecological input on major infrastructure and development projects
  • Managing project budgets, programmes, and deliverables
  • Planning and undertaking field surveys, and interpreting survey data
  • Designing and coordinating mitigation strategies and licensing
  • Writing and reviewing ecological reports, including EcIAs and HRAs
  • Supporting early-career staff through mentoring and knowledge sharing
  • Preparing bids and managing client relationships
  • Developing a strong internal and external network within the southern UK region

What We're Looking For

  • Strong professional background in UK ecology, ideally at Senior or Principal level
  • Full membership of CIEEM (or equivalent), with chartership (CEcol or CEnv) preferred
  • Strong project management skills (technical, financial, and quality assurance)
  • Botanical identification skills (FISC Level 4+ or equivalent experience)
  • Proven experience in UKHab surveys, Biodiversity Net Gain assessments, and use of the Defra Biodiversity Metric
  • Skilled in producing high-quality ecological reports, including PEAs, EcIAs, HRA, and BNG documentation
  • Knowledge of Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects and the DCO process is highly desirable
  • Protected species survey licences are advantageous
  • Full UK driving licence required

Urban Land Institute.

In partnership with Urban Land Institute we are able to play an imperative role in creating a larger and more diverse pool of candidates within the planning & property professions. Working in schools we take part in the Urban Plan Educational workshops programme, which has now reached more than 2,500 pupils in 100 schools since its launch. Alongside more than 200 industry volunteers engaged across the country, we provide invaluable industry & careers advice to students while guiding them through their workshops and helping judge their presentations.



Carbon Footprint.
