Newham is an ambitious borough committed to putting people at the heart of everything we do. Highways, Sustainable Transport and Parking Services are universal front facing services that all of our residents and visitors interact with. Therefore, it is vital that we strengthen these services and make them as responsive to our residents' needs as possible. The Senior Highway Officer role is key to enabling us to achieve this goal.

The purpose of the role is to help keep Newham moving by ensuring that the borough's highway network is safe. As a Senior Highway Officer, you will have an important front line task ensuring highway inspections and insurance claims carried out in accordance with agreed time schedules, develop highway inspection regimes. Ensure successful delivery of winter service and manage highway road surface water drainage related tasks.

You should be suitably experienced for this role with at least 12 months of experience of undertaking either highways or street works management. You will also ideally have knowledge of highway construction, maintenance and highway construction materials, techniques and specifications.

  • Knowledge of the practical application of specific techniques and legislation relevant to the service, e.g. Highways Act 1980 and Traffic Signs and General Directions 2002.
  • Knowledge of the requirements of relevant Health and Safety legislation.
  • Ability to build effective and productive working relationships with the Principal Officer, colleagues and clients.
  • To be articulate, both in written and oral form, and to be highly numerate.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with consultants, contractors, the public and the media.
  • Ability to work under pressure and own initiative to maintain high work output and achieve tasks to agreed deadlines with minimal supervision
  • Ability to provide technical advice and specialist guidance to colleagues, clients and service providers.
  • Full driving licence is required

We also keep in close contact with our friends down under, at the Planning Institute Australia and New Zealand Planning Institute. In addition, we sponsor the London Planning Summit, an event designed to address the biggest challenges facing the industry. This is our opportunity to stay on top of the latest changes in town planning by meeting with other key professionals in the sector, while celebrating our achievements.

One of our clients, LandSec, are the clever people behind Girls Can Do It Too, an initiative designed to encourage girls to consider a career in construction. Currently, only 11% of the construction workforce are female, and LandSec are attempting to increase this number by providing education and engagement projects and workshops for girls aged 11-13. Urban Land Institute.

In partnership with Urban Land Institute we are able to play an imperative role in creating a larger and more diverse pool of candidates within the planning & property professions. Working in schools we take part in the Urban Plan Educational workshops programme, which has now reached more than 2,500 pupils in 100 schools since its launch. Alongside more than 200 industry volunteers engaged across the country, we provide invaluable industry & careers advice to students while guiding them through their workshops and helping judge their presentations.

Carbon Footprint.

Carbon FootprintTM have allowed us to not only do our bit for the environment but also commemorate moments of growth for our clients and candidates.
