Employee Spotlight: Ross Billingham

Early Career

My first introduction to construction was during my university years where I aquired a Masters in Town Planning. The definition of town planning is simply the planning of the physical environment and the social development within it. I soon learned at an early stage the amount of effort and strategy that went into setting out the built environment and the infrastructure surrounding it. After leaving university I began working within construction, first as a labourer in Australia on sites all over their country and second as a site supervisor for my uncle's Electrical firm when I returned.

I began my career in recruitment when I moved to London a year ago, choosing to recruit within the sector that I had so many years' experience in: construction.

What does that mean for you?

building-construction-building-site-constructingI now recruit for the construction industry and specialise in site management, project management and surveying. As I spent several years on site and later managing them, I can relate to the candidates I talk to on a day to day basis. Whether you are looking for your next permanent role to further your career, or simply your next contract job to add to your project portfolio, I will be able to steer you in the right direction. During my time on site I worked in several types of work within the industry including new build, refurb and fit out, and as a result I am looking for good Site Managers in all these sectors.

I became aware of the importance of planning and cost during my time at university and later on site as I dealt with invoices and later when quoting jobs. I have therefore developed a keen interest and understanding of project management and surveying as I have progressed through my recruitment career. I predominately worked within buildings during my time in construction, so I now recruit for these types of projects across residential, commercial, retail and education sectors.

To summarise I have been in and around construction my whole life, a large majority of my friends and family work within the industry. I have a real passion for the sector as I believe a healthy construction industry is an indication of a healthy society. Society has a lot of obstacles to overcome in the future, and construction has an important part to play in addressing these issues whether they be environmental, resources or simply about space.

I have worked my way up from a labourer to site supervisor communicating with construction workers at all levels, putting me in a prime position to recruit for the sector.

Positions I recruit for:

  • Site Managers
  • On site Health and Safety
  • Project Managers
  • Building Surveyors
  • Quantity Surveyors

If you are currently looking for any of these roles, or would just like to disucss the market and potential career development, feel free to give me a call on 0207 960 2554 or rtb@mattpart.com

IMG 1778 1I recently joined Mattinson in February 2018, working alongside Dominic on the Construction and Built Environment desk. After graduating from Newcastle University with a Masters in Town Planning, I have worked in and around the Construction Industry both on and off site for a number of years. Outside of work you will usually find me doing DIY work in my flat which is slowly falling apart piece by piece!
