OUR MP GRADUATES: Why did they join?

Over the years, we have been fortunate to attract and recruit some excellent graduates who have gone on to become highly successful consultants and managers.  We were keen to understand more about what attracts these successful people to our organisation and from a series of interviews, we identified a number or prevailing themes which we have presented in the Q&A style blog below.

If you are considering a career in recruitment, we would be keen for chat! Get in touch >

Elliot Mellish

Senior Recruitment Consultant,

Joined September 2016 as a Graduate

What did you study, and when did you graduate?

I studied BSc Environmental Science at Queen Mary, University of London. I graduated with a 2:1 in 2015.

How did you hear about the graduate position? (if it wasn’t graduate, what is your experience)

Once I left University I knew I was interested in a career where you are rewarded financially for your hard work. I wanted to combine my knowledge of the environment with a career in sales. I came across Mattinson Partnership’s Graduate Opportunities as the company is a leading recruiter in the Built and Natural Environment.

What initially attracted you to the business?

I was initially attracted by the business’ reputation in the market. Once I met with Dominic and David I got a clear understanding that this is a company who will put a lot of faith in someone’s natural abilities. The clear development plan they proposed showed me how my skills could be nurtured in order to become a successful Consultant. It was really promising to see how quickly Consultants with a similar background to myself took to a role in recruitment (a job that was completely alien to me at the time!). It was clear that if you have the right mentality, Mattinson Partnership will give you all the tools you need to succeed.

Did you have any other job offers? If so, what specifically made you chose us?

I didn’t have any other offers at the time, however I did have other interviews lined up. Once I completed my trial day with Mattinson Partnership, there was no need to attend any other interviews. I had found a company that matched my ambition and I was delighted to accept the role of Graduate / Trainee Consultant.

What did you study, and when did you graduate?

I graduated in June 2018 with a 2:1 BSc Architecture degree from the University of the West of England, Bristol.

How did you hear about the graduate position? (if it wasn’t graduate, what is your experience)

I contacted David directly and we discussed the position after coming across the company online.

What initially attracted you to the business?

From a personal perspective, I wanted to continue working in the Architecture industry (without actually being an Architect). I get to visit various different studios and see the work that’s taking place first hand, which is always exciting. Mattinson in particular have a great passion for the environment; the Mattinson Forest was a huge attraction for me and I’m looking forward to contributing to the expansion of the forest.

Did you have any other job offers? If so, what specifically made you chose us?

I did have other offers; I chose Mattinson because I immediately felt like a valued member of the company and the team are fun and supportive. There are lots of opportunities for progression, which appealed to me as I would like to be in a management position.

What did you study, and when did you graduate?

Geography and I graduated in July 2018

How did you hear about the graduate position? (if it wasn’t graduate, what is your experience)

I was introduced to MP by a Rec2Rec (another recruiter) via LinkedIn! She saw my profile and suggested that I had the environmental background and personable skills which would fit well with the position.

What initially attracted you to the business?

The website was really impressive and seemed like a friendly organisation! I really liked the company’s wider motivations – I was particularly impressed by the Mattinson Forest, where we plant a tree for every placement as part of our offsetting scheme. I wanted to work for an organisation that actually cares about the industry they service. You can read more about my experience in a blog post I did when I first started.

Did you have any other job offers? If so, what specifically made you chose us?

No! After meeting the team and getting a trial day on the job, I was keen to work for MP and this was the only place I applied. I also really liked the idea of constantly building relationships and working with people. I spend most of my day meeting or speaking to candidates and clients and I love it!

What did you study, and when did you graduate?

BSc Geography - graduated in 2018

How did you hear about the graduate position? (if it wasn’t graduate, what is your experience)

Towards the end of my degree I began looking for jobs in geography on different job boards, but came across the Graduate Recruitment Consultant position on Green Jobs.

What initially attracted you to the business?

Initially, the opportunity to use my geography and business skills simultaneously attracted me to the role. But upon meeting with David, his enthusiasm and drive for the company made me equally motivated and excited for this first step in my career.

Did you have any other job offers? If so, what specifically made you chose us?

Before recruitment I was looking at third sector roles (voluntary/ community), but found that the motivating factors were not comparable between the two - especially during this stage of my life. As a recent grad, my motivators revolve around money and career progression and found that recruitment, particularly at Mattinson, was a much better fit. It is now my goal to be a Senior Recruitment Consultant by January 2020 and believe that this is very obtainable given the skills I am continuing to gain on the job, and from my mentors - Dom and Greg - who continue to encourage and push me to be better. The commission here is also very attractive.

Whether you found us online, through another agency or completely by accident, the reasons you will stick around are quite clear - career progression, our company culture, the ability to work in your field but with a stronger business mindset, and in a lot of cases our environmental intiatives. If this sounds like you, or feel as though you can relate to the stories shared – get in touch! We would love to hear from you!
