Our client is currently looking for a Senior Rail Economist to lead on the delivery of current rail planning portfolio of work.

Job description

The Senior Rail Economist will be involved in a range of economic projects covering scheme appraisal, demand and revenue forecasting, policy analysis and strategy development, and will provide economics advice across all transport modes.

A key member of the Rail Planning team, activity could cover a wide range of disciplines, so flexibility and the ability to think through problems are essential. Responsibilities of the role will include the following:

  • Forecasting of underlying public transport demand trends, and determining regional characteristics (both exogenous and endogenous)
  • Revenue and benefit forecasting for a range of schemes from minor to strategic (including journey time savings, accident and congestion improvements)
  • Calculation of TOC operating costs including fixed and variable track access costs
  • Analysis of rolling stock, leasing and maintenance costs
  • Preparation of Business Cases (both for the private sector and the public sector)

Candidate specification

Applicants must have excellent commercial and financial management awareness, be committed to providing high quality solutions and advice to clients and have first class report writing, project management, supervisory, communication and technical ability.
Characteristics that we would expect in successful applicants:

  • A degree in a numerate discipline, preferably economics related
  • Good understanding of the UK rail industry
  • Experience in Transportation Economics with a consultancy or within the UK rail industry likely to have been gained over 8+ years
  • The candidate needs to have practical experience of PDFH, RIFF and WebTAG/NATA or equivalent and rail industry datasets (LENNON)
  • Good communication and analytical skills plus proven managerial experience
  • A positive ‘can-do’ attitude and a flexible and responsive approach to problem solving are also desirable
